WALKWAY SAFETY PROGRAM
Old Storke Plaza - April 2022

Specifications

Pardall Corridor is a 20 ft. wide walkway that extends from Isla Vista all the way to the major north-south walkway just west of Davidson Library.

Prior to the construction of the "new" Storke Plaza just north of the UCen, this 40 ft. wide expanse of concrete served as a center for public gatherings, information tables, etc. Today, it serves as UCSB's Trip Hazard Central at the east end of Skateboard Lane (aka Pardall Corridor) with its uneven slabs of concrete separated by broken ribbons of aggregate.

Replacing the 6,000 square feet in the 156'x40' rectangle would cost in the neighborhood of $150,000 to $200,000. Given that six of the 20'x20' squares of concrete along the north edge of the plaza are no longer needed, the area could be reduced to 3,600 square feet which would not only save at least $50,000 but also make the corridor more attractive in the process. It should be noted that all of the green landscaping to the east and northeast of the Music Bldg was recently lost to bicycle parking making the idea even more attractive.
